Suitcase of Happyness A Roadmap to Achieve and Enjoy Your Happiest Life Mark Jaffe 9780997462005 Books

A couple of times a year I read books about happiness and achieving my goals to inspire me, remind me, give me new ideas, and keep me focused. Let’s face it, following your dreams, being happy, and independent is tough. Many people who are not happy and are not following their dreams become haters and want to bring you down. Moreover, there are temptations from advertising to follow the consumer culture’s ideas of what happiness should be. Usually, that means buying things and being a certain kind of “cool” that is truly not you.

Mark’s book inspired me to stay focused on my dreams. His book is an easy and enjoyable read. He writes well and with enthusiasm, including real-world stories of events he has overcome and that have formed his philosophy, a philosophy that is laid out in ten pathways. I would bet anything you already know what these pathways are but have been reluctant to follow them, as though being happy, independent, and following your dreams is some crazy risk. It’s not. Mark will inspire you and detail concrete steps. He cites several aphorisms from famous people and studies about happiness to back up his claim.

If you’re stuck and not happy, read this book. If you’re already living the life you want, read this book for reinforcement, to find a compatriot, and generate new ideas. Recommended.

How do you craft your own idea of happy, if not out of a life built upon thousands of simple joys.

This is the message being explored by former Walt Disney executive Mark Jaffe in his book ‘Suitcase of Happyness A Roadmap to Achieve and Enjoy your Happiest Life’.

Perfect for anyone feeling a little bit lost, unfulfilled or disillusioned, this book provides an insightful look into what it means to be happy, common barriers to our ability to experience true contentment and ten pathways to living a life rich in gratitude and joy. I think most readers will find something empowering and inspiring to take away from this book, whether it be a reminder about the importance of practicing mindfulness and building connection in our lives, the value that can be derived from following your passions and embracing opportunities or the significant effect that comes from living a purpose as well as taking pleasure in simplicity. I know that I certainly did.

At its core this is a book about gratitude and building a meaningful life. I have to admit that I didn’t find anything especially unique or conceptually ground-breaking to the self-development field hidden within its pages, and anyone who has paid any attention to the rise of the simple living movement will likely be familiar with much of what is explored in this book, but it did manage to do what a lot of similar books cannot; distil a complex concept into a clear and concise guide filled with simple, achievable and practical steps to creating a life rich in happiness. It is broken down into sections about what it means to be happy, a concept that will be different to everyone, and how to focus on collecting happy memories and moments, overcoming common obstacles to achieving happiness as well as exploring what you can do in your daily life to cultivate your own ‘suitcase of happyness’. It is incredibly quick and easy to read, written in an almost casual, conversational language and interspersed with Jaffe’s personal experiences, humorous anecdotes and nostalgic reflections to create something not only insightful but engaging. There is something very real and honest about this book, Jaffe uses his personal journey to great effect, exploring how simple daily experiences, as well as the highs and the lows of important moments in his life have helped to shape his concept of happiness, as well as drawing from wider literature and relevant research to really ground each concept and enhance his points. This book manages to be both genuinely helpful and motivating, without feeling too pretentious, although like many 'self-help' stylized books something feels very privileged about the advice, which is told through a very westernized, first world lens.

However, there is something so important and valuable about these sorts of concepts and these types of books. This is a book that asks its readers to stop and think about the way they interact with the world, from our relationship with material items to our definition of success. It is a reminder to open ourselves up to new experiences and opportunities, to embrace fun but retain perspective in the way we view both ourselves and the world. I have little doubt that many readers will find something about this book that will resonate, something useful that they can take and add to their life.

We do not have to wait to be happy, it is not some abstract concept only achievable at some unforeseeable point in the future, but rather it is a state of being that we can choose and cultivate in the way we think and approach our lives.

Suitcase of Happyness teaches us, in a personal and poignant style, to choose and embrace happiness in our lives. There are many manuals written on this subject, many of them offering helpful advice, but Mark Jaffe's beautiful story shows us a roadmap that worked for him - one that may also work for us.
Mark has written a very insightful, credible and easy to read book on how we can introduce more 'Happyness" into our lives. This is so important given the pressures and challenges all of us have to deal with today. We need to step back and find a better balance. Mark's roadmap and suggestions can really help an person at any stage of their life. Definitely worth reading.
What a great, practical book. The stories were amazing. If you are looking for a book to find the happyness inside you - buy it!
This is one of the most beneficial and uplifting books I've read in years. It's a terrific read with real-life tips on how to lead a more satisfying life. The author includes dozens of practical suggestions for achieving contentment on a daily basis. And reading about his own personal journey is fascinating. I highly recommend this book to everyone seeking a new level of calm and serenity in their lives.
I've read a lot of "self-help" books and this one really stands out. Unlike other books about increasing your level of satisfaction and joy in everyday living, this book actually offers concrete recommendations on how to achieve those goals. It's a quick read - if you really are motivated, you can read it in a day or two. It's the type of book that can be consumed quickly, yet the lessons and tutorials on how to be happy can last a lifetime.
