Charlie Bennett is a rising star in the world of sports journalism, but her personal life is a mess. Still hung up on her college sweetheart, a one-night-stand gone wrong convinces her that she needs to make a change. An offer for a one-year guest lecturer position from a small private university provides her the opportunity she needs to escape, and she jumps at it. All Charlie expected to find when she left Manhattan for rural New Hampshire was a little peace. Instead, she finds Mackayla Thomas. Eight years have passed since Charlie foolishly walked away from Mackayla, and Mackayla is determined to never let anyone hurt her that way again. For Charlie, their serendipitous meeting is a sign that happily ever after might finally be within her reach. First, however, she needs to find a way to convince Mackayla to let the past go, and to give her a second chance.

Second Chances edition by MJ Duncan Literature Fiction eBooks

Second Chances is a fun, light-hearted book, and a pleasant way to pass an evening. The characters feel distinct and real, and dialogue - something that can easily turn stilted or formal - flows naturally. Although we did get some background and a clear picture of where they were coming from and how they've grown, I would've liked to see more of Mac & Charlie's personal development leading up to their reunion. To some extent, we joined them halfway through their journey and the hard part was already over. Maybe I'm just a sucker for gut-twisting angst, but I would've liked to get deeper into their struggles. That said, this is a sweet romance that will leave you with warm fuzzies at the end of the day.

Second Chances edition by MJ Duncan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

An absolutely lovely romance story of lost love, floundering through life and then fate happening to allow a second chance. The story of Charlie and Mac was awesome and it's a good thing they both had best friends who knew their history and subtlety guided them to not loose each other again!!
I had no idea what to expect and I am more than glad that I gave this book a go! It is written in a way that just pulls you in. The interaction between Charlie and Mac is very believable and the supporting cast of characters adds some fantastic humor to the story. I loved the way the conversations between Charlie and Mac played out whether they were arguing or giving each other a hard time or laying their hearts on the line. I'm actually looking forward to reading it again and getting lost in their great story. I definitely recommend this one and can't wait to read another by this author! Great book!
If you are looking for a good balance of angst, steamy lovemaking, laughter and joy.... That this is the book for you. I will be looking at other titles from this author asap)
I enjoyed this book. I would recommend it. It is a reminder of early love and the harshness of coming out of the closet and the beauty of it as well. Once I started this book I did not want to put it down
Pretty fun read, it was fluffy, the side characters are fun. There wasn't all too much of a major conflict or drama for that matter, Mac and Charlie's dilemma could have been easily solved and it was, so there really was no need to feel like the couple would not work out. Non to mention their extremely slow start, I just hoped to see them together a little earlier instead of two thirds in the book and left with not much of the book left to see them actually together. The last third felt rushed and I wish I could have seen more of Mac and Charlie as a couple. There was close to no drama and I felt like this one needed a little bit of it. I've read other works from this author and to be honest I prefer the drama in those more than this one and there was always the right amount and brought more out of the characters in a good way. Not the exhausting drama of a third party interfering with their relationship (so glad mj never does this) but the drama of a dangerous situation or something that teaches them the right things, like Charlie being in an accident just as Mac decides to give her a second chance and further makes her realize the importance of living in the moment and going with what she feels should happen, giving her a sense of a solid resolve if you will. The love scenes were pretty cute but they could do with a little less repetition and more exploration to bring out more of Mac and Charlie to each other. There is exploration of their personalities but it felt like there were too few because the majority of the book focuses more on getting them together and facing their insecurities brought by their sour history. Mac and Charlie are both pretty relatable but it would have been nice to see them be themselves around each other more often I can only remember too few a time when they would show each other the side of themselves they found endearing in the other because again the first two thirds felt really drawn out and long which left the last third too rushed and too short to see more side to of Mac and Charlie. All in all I did enjoy it. I enjoyed Mac and Charlie's chemistry and I like how there isn't an emphasis on archetypes, their roles in their relationship did confuse me at first mainly because of their occupations but then again I think it's meant to not emphasize who's supposed to be the girly one or who is the no-so girly one. I just hoped to see more of the passion as well as everything else I read from her other works in this one considering these are her own original characters. It did feel like it was missing a few things or the balance was off in some way, but it was still a charming little read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author show good writing and the story was decent. The last 3rd was slower, but still not bad. Of course I was hooked after Mt Union was mentioned being an alum.
Overall, I really enjoyed the storyline and characters of this book. It was a bit predictable, but I was okay with that - we all need a good romance and every now and then.

My only negative critique was the over usage of the phrase "she swallowed thickly." I counted and it was used 35 times! I think the editor could have suggested switching up that descriptor because it became distracting and annoying. Maybe it's just me, but it was honestly used so much that it's worth mentioning in my review (it really stuck out). I also would have preferred if the author hadn't referred to the characters so much by their hair color. I like descriptive characterization, but at some point enough is enough. Entirely too many sentences included "she looked at the blonde," or "the brunette said." I think the pronouns she or her would have worked just fine.

But overall, it was an enjoyable read. I'd actually recommend it to my friends.
