Ms. Tierney's book is so stunningly simple, so practical and useful, and such easy reading that it should be a 'must read' for anyone, regardless of gender.....and the lessons therein do not just apply to 'at work', they are Life Lessons and she presents them brilliantly in a style that is superbly easy to read! She uses real life examples and brings the real people involved to life for her readers, and the lessons are all contained in the body of the vignettes, without pages of 'you must do this' instructions and 'rules' and such that one needs in order to not just feel, but to BE empowered. I've attended many seminars and sessions with world-renowned motivational speakers and time management instructors and personal development trainers and life coaches, and read many books on those subjects, and Ms. Tierney's "Women EMPOWERMENT at Work: Create Your Own Success" ranks with any and all of them. And while 'aimed' primarily at women, and very properly so, the lessons are there in this book for anyone of any gender or age who wishes to listen......and learn; learn how to enjoy every day and every aspect of one's own life the way one wishes to, by learning how to empower oneself, all by oneself. This book is a great combination of issues and concerns we have all experienced paired with solid coaching on how to address these issues. Read it yourself and give it as a gift to every woman you know in business!
Lisa's passion shines through every word of this must-read book for any woman working today. She's a natural cheerleader for those women who want to rise through the ranks and touches upon a number of issues that I hold dear to my heart - flex time; telecommuting; better interpersonal dynamics with coworkers and supervisors; boundary setting; and yes, fitness at lunchtime to get the mojo going!
What I loved about Lisa's book is the examples she gives and the stories she gathered to share with other women who want to bring their best, whole selves to their career.

We all need guidance from time to time.
No matter how far along in our careers we are or how successful we’ve become, circumstances arise that require some outside coaching.
Younger professionals may need some basic soft skill training—what to wear, how to conduct themselves in business meetings—that perhaps seem obvious, but are rarely taught in school or upon entering the business world.
As we get older, the guidance we need and often fail to obtain centers around better understanding others and ourselves in order to benefit not only our careers but the companies, coworkers and clients we serve.
While both men and women could grow through such guidance, what is often ignored is the fundamental differences in which men and women react in certain situations and how workplace dynamics can ultimately impact whether individuals thrive or struggle to survive in their current and future positions.

This is not a feminist position paper on girl power, but rather an exercise in doing and saying the right things to be viewed as a leader in one’s own right.
Some of the most compelling stories throughout the book come from high-powered women who share lessons they learned during their rise to the top.
Much of the advice offered could easily apply to both men and women, such as asking your subordinates what would make them happier and conducting meetings effectively. The value-add for women is how Tierney points to research demonstrating that the brains of men and women are wired differently and cities situations in which males have negatively critiqued their female colleagues for their behavior. For example, Tierney says women tend to talk more than men during meetings, which puts off some of their male bosses.
She offers suggestions on how women can alter their behavior when approaching a group of men in order to positively affect the results.
Observing this type of scenario could make a world of difference to women who work for men, particularly a group of older male partners in a conservative profession who may be accustomed to working a particular way for decades.
So often, women in the marketing role at accounting firms complain about how difficult it is to get buy-in from partners at their firms, no matter what the project. They struggle with how to demonstrate the return on investment, or even how to ask for the necessary money to begin with.
